FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The 2012 cross country season opens at home on Friday for both the CSU women’s and CSU men’s cross country squads. The Colorado State Open will be held at Hughes Stadium, beginning at 6 p.m. MT. The Rams will host the Air Force Academy, the University of Northern Colorado, and Colorado School of Mines as both men and women run the 5,000 meter race.
The men, led by returning Mountain West All-Conference selection Christian Meyer, are ranked fourth in the Mountain West Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The women, led by another 2011 Mountain West All-Conference selection, junior Hannah Pensack-Rinehart, were selected by the Mountain West coaches to finish third in the conference this year. Both men and women are looking forward to a successful year, and the Colorado State Open will be a chance for the runners to get ready for later NCAA qualifying meets.
“The team trained extremely hard this summer. They’re very aerobically fit. This weekend’s race is just a starting point for the competitive season,” newly introduced head cross country coach Art Siemers said Tuesday.
The women’s squad, who finished second in the Mountain West and fifth in the NCAA Mountain Regional in 2011, returns four of their top seven runners from last year. The men’s squad, who took third in the Mountain West and 10th in the NCAA Mountain Regional last year, returns five of their top seven runners.
The meet will be unscored, a tune-up meet for the four teams participating as they prepare for the competitive season. The home environment presents an opportunity for family and friends of Ram harriers to watch them perform. Spectator parking is available at Gate 4 near the intersection of Dixon Canyon Road and Overland Road in Fort Collins.
