FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Aside from a year that saw the men’s cross country team earn its first national ranking in a decade, and 13 Mountain West track & field champions during the following spring, Colorado State shined academically, with several team and individual accolades.

At the close of the fall semester both the men’s and women’s cross country teams held a cumulative grade-point average above a 3.4. The Rams were rewarded for their success in the classroom, with 15 student-athletes named to the fall MW Academic All-Conference list. Both squads were also honored by the United States Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association as DI Cross Country All-Academic teams for compiling a semester GPA above a 3.0.

The 110-athlete track & field roster also met and exceeded expectations during the fall, compiling an impressive team GPA over a 3.0 through the end of 2013. After the conclusion of the 2014 season, the Mountain West awarded 43 athletes with academic all-conference honors, 10 more than the previous year, and it the most recipients since the 2006 campaign.

Following the announcement of the academic all-MW honorees, the league posted its Scholar-Athlete winners, honoring those who maintain a GPA at 3.5 or above. The men’s and women’s track & field/cross country squads accounted for a program-record 44 awards. Eleven student-athletes from the distance crew totaled 22 awards for their work on both the cross country and track & field teams.

In addition to winning two academic all-conference nods this past year, as well as his seventh and eighth career Scholar-Athlete awards, senior Christian Meyer was honored as CSU’s 2014 Merrill-Gheen recipient and the Mountain West Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The first male to ever win the MW’s coveted award for Colorado State, Meyer embodied the definition of “student-athlete.” Maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.845 throughout his collegiate career as a physics major, he was involved in many community projects, and led the cross country team to its highest finish at nationals in 10 years.
