COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Former Colorado State cross country and track & field student-athlete Christian Meyer was honored with the Mountain West’s Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award. The conference made the announcement Tuesday.
After earning his bachelor’s degree in physics this past May, Meyer will receive a $2,500 postgrad scholarship, which he will put toward attending grad school at Vanderbilt this fall.
Meyer became the fifth track & field athlete to win CSU’s Merrill-Gheen Award in the past eight years on Friday. Throughout his collegiate career, the Albuquerque, N.M., native maintained an outstanding cumulative GPA of 3.845. In the 2013-14 academic year Meyer was a two-time academic all-conference recipient as well as a Mountain West Scholar-Athlete. This past year he held the highest GPA amongst his senior classmates on both the cross country and track & field squads. He was also involved in many community projects, including the Lutheran Campus Ministries and Whispering Winds Family Camp during his collegiate career with the Rams.
In addition to his academic accomplishments, Meyer was a vital cog in the men’s cross country team’s success last fall. He led CSU to a sixth place finish at the NCAA Mountain Regional, earning all-region for his performance, while the Rams qualified for their first championship in nine years. He then paced the pack in the championship race, leading Colorado State to a 26th place finish, its highest national ranking in 10 years.
“We are excited to hear that Christian won the male Mountain West scholar-athlete of the year,” said Head Coach Art Siemers. “He was our leader in cross country helping us to our best NCAA National Championships finish since 2003 and matching our best all-time second place finish at the Mountain West Championships. In track and field he was our best distance runner finishing with all-Mountain West honors in the steeplechase and earning a berth in the first round of the NCAA championships. Christian’s leadership and hard work will be sorely missed but we are excited for his future as a graduate student in physics at Vanderbilt University.”
Meyer earned second-team all-MW at the league cross country championship, and he was awarded all-conference in the 3,000-meter steeplechase for a second-place finish at the MW outdoor championships.
Meyer is the first CSU male to ever win the award and the third Rams’ student-athlete to be honored in the Mountain West’s 15-year history. He is the first athlete to win since April Thomas, a fellow distance runner, who was awarded the accolade in 2008.
