AUSTIN, Texas – Nicole Peters advanced to the NCAA championships in the 3,000-meter steeplechase Friday, finishing seventh in the event on Day 2 of the NCAA West regional at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
The senior from Houston, Texas, finished the race in 10 minutes, 16.15 seconds, placing third in her heat.
“She looked controlled and confident,” said Head Coach Brian Bedard. “She needed to make a move with two laps left and moved into third for automatic qualifying time. That’s where we wanted her to be and she made it look easy.”
Peters will race next at the NCAA championships in Des Monies, Iowa, scheduled for June 6-9.
Kaitlin Hanenburg placed 34th in the event, finishing in 10:52.69.
Brown ran the second-fastest time in his heat and 10th overall, clocking in at 13.86. Dias posted a time of 14.13, the 25th fastest time in the opening round of the event.
“We’re happy our hurdlers got through,” said Bedard. “They were a lot more focused this year than last year. Trevor Brown looked a lot more confident and focused in his race, as did Kelby.”
Both athletes will compete Saturday at 6:05 p.m. MST, in a field of 27 athletes; 12 will advance to nationals.
In the women’s discus throw, Jessica Sharbono threw for a distance of 166 feet, 8 inches, earning 15th place. Kiah Hicks recorded a toss of 162-2, which put her in 25th place.
Competition resumes for the Rams at 1 p.m. MST Saturday, with the women’s hammer throw.
