FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State track & field team will send 23 athletes to compete in 27 events in the first leg of the road to the NCAA Championships at the NCAA West Preliminary in Fayetteville, Ark., beginning May 29.
This is the most CSU has sent to the preliminary round since 2007, when the team also had 23 qualifiers. The men’s squad will send 15, while the women’s team will be represented by eight athletes. Of those 23, the Rams are comprised of eight throwers, six distance runners, six sprinters and three jumpers.
Several athletes will compete in multiple events. Both Trevor Brown and Sam Little will run in both hurdling events. Tyler Schultz will throw the shot put and hammer, while freshman Aaliyah Pete will throw the shot put and discus.
Jessica Sharbono will take part in three throwing events, the discus, shot put and hammer. She finished the regular season ranked 49th in the hammer, but made the top 48 list for the prelim with a scratch ahead of her.
Kiah Hicks, who had a phenomenal throw at last week’s MW championships, currently ranks seventh in the nation in the hammer. She’ll participate in that event, as well as the discus.
Other athletes competing are Seth Butler in the 800 meters, Chloe Phillips in the 1,500-meter run, Christian Meyer and Kaitlin Hanenburg in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Jefferson Abbey and Holly Keeper in the 5,000 meters, Alison Forrester in the high jump, Jonathan Edmunds and Trey Richardson in the triple jump, Jake Schneeberger, Alec Pott and Monet Jackson in the hammer and JT Van Veen in the discus. The men’s 4x100-meter relay team of Josh DeLoach, Troy Johnson, Marcus Harris and Evan Taylor, who placed second at the MW championships last weekend, will run in the west prelim as well.
The preliminary will be held at John McDonnell Field at Arkansas. For more information on the meet click here.
