NEW ORLEANS – Colorado State junior Mostafa Hassan has been selected as a candidate for collegiate track & field’s highest honor for the fifth consecutive poll, as he was named to the Pre-NCAA Prelims Men’s Watch List for The Bowerman Award. The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches’ Association (USTFCCCA) announced its most recent watch lists on Thursday.

The purpose of The Bowerman Award is to recognize the nation’s most outstanding track & field athlete. Hassan is one of two throwers to make the list, and one of 10 athletes in the nation to be selected to the list. Hassan became the first athlete in program history to be named a candidate for The Bowerman Award when he was named to the Pre-Indoor Championships list on March 2.

Hassan, the NCAA’s No. 1 shot putter and the world’s No. 7-ranked shot putter, recorded his season-best mark and lifetime-best mark of 69-11 (21.31m) at the Mt. SAC Relays’ elite invitational. Hassan leads the nation by over two and a half feet (67-4/20.52m by Virginia's Filip Mihaljevic), and holds shot put records on CSU and Mountain West all-time lists, both outdoor and indoor.

The Cairo, Egypt native heads to the NCAA West Preliminary as the No. 1-seeded athlete in the shot put. In addition, Hassan took down the previous Mountain West indoor shot put record with a mark of 69-10.75 (21.30m) at the MW Indoor Track & Field Championships. Hassan won his fourth Mountain West shot put title (second outdoor) last weekend with a MW Championships-record mark of 66-4.5 (20.23m). Hassan is one of four athletes in MW history to win two outdoor shot put titles, while his four total titles (two outdoor, two indoor) are the second-most in MW history.

Hassan’s other accolades include three All-America honors (two indoor honors), two Mountain West Men’s Student-Athlete of the Year honors (one indoor, one outdoor), four MW shot put championships (two outdoor, two indoor) and Colorado State’s most recent individual national championship (2017 indoor shot put). Hassan finished the indoor season with a best mark of 69-10.75 (21.30m), distinguishing him as the No. 10 indoor performer in NCAA history. Hassan was the No. 4 performer in the world during the indoor season.

Hassan is among 27 qualifying athletes from the Colorado State track & field team that will travel to Austin, Texas next week for the 2017 NCAA West Preliminary. The meet is hosted by the University of Texas, and will be held from Mike A. Myers Stadium from Thursday, May 25 through Saturday, May 27.
