FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Colorado State's multi-event athletes finished competition at Day 1 of the Mountain West Conference championships Wednesday at Jack Christiansen Track.
Sophia Wagner led the Rams in the heptathlon tallying 2,983 points, currently sitting in third. Wagner began the day with a fifth-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles, with a time of 14.83 seconds. She later went on to place third in the high jump, clearing a height of 5 feet, 3.75 inches. In the shot put, Wagner placed second, recording a distance of 37-01.25.
"Sophia had a really solid first day with some personal records," said Head Coach Brian Bedard. "We had tough conditions but Sophia competed through it."
Cate Brus, who is currently seventh with 2,811 points, placed second in the high jump, clearing a height of 5-05 and took seventh in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing in 15.07. She also recorded a pair of seventh-place finishes in the shot put (30-04.25) and the 200-meter dash (27.11).
"I thought Cate would have been in a better position," added Bedard, "but she's also injured and not competing at 100 percent."
Josh McMillin sits in fifth place in the decathlon with 3,407 points after starting the day with two fifth-place finishes in the 100-meter dash (11.31) and the long jump (21-05.25). McMillin had an impressive performance in the shot put, finishing in second, with a toss of 39-10.
Matt Collins recorded 3,150 total points, currently putting him in eighth place. Collins earned a fourth-place finish in the 100-meter dash, with a time of 11.27. He then took eighth in the long jump, with a leap of 20-03.5.
"The men are where we thought they would be," mentioned Bedard. "Josh has been slowed by a shoulder injury.
"It was a challenging day for all the athletes but it looks like the weather is supposed to improve over the next three days so we're looking forward to that."
