FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Colorado State's RAMBITION is hosting a lupus awareness walk to honor the memory of Erica Johnson, the younger sister of track & field student-athlete Ashley Reid, who lost a battle to the disease last October.
The walk will take place at 12 p.m. MT on May 10 prior to the Rams' Senior Day softball game vs. San José State at 1 p.m. The course will begin and end at the softball field, following a one-mile loop around the intramural fields.
Proud of Reid's accomplishments, Johnson postponed her kidney biopsy last year for the opportunity to attend the MW championships in Las Vegas to watch her sister. She was later diagnosed with lupus that summer. After a grueling three-month battle, she passed on Oct. 25, 2013. Reid admired her sister's courage and strength through it all and said Johnson never lost her sense of humor.
Lupus is an autoimmune disease with mild effects for most people, but 20,000 Americans die from it each year, 90 percent of which are women. To date there is no cure.
Admission to the walk is free, but donations are encouraged. All funds collected will go to help benefit Lupus Colorado. Free parking is available in the Moby Arena lot, west of the softball field.
About Lupus Colorado
Lupus Colorado was established in 1972 for the purpose of providing support, education and training to everyone that is affected by the disease of Lupus. Our programs and services are designed to assist people with Lupus and their family and friends in dealing with the frustrations that may be encountered daily, living with a challenging and chronic illness. When a person inquires about Lupus, we respond immediately, realizing our job is to address the concerns, fears, and lack of knowledge about Lupus. We also strive to bring community awareness about the disease and the programs Lupus Colorado offers. Both awareness and education can be the key to saving lives.
