FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State track & field team recently announced the signing of thrower Aaliyah Pete to its 2013 recruiting class, adding another piece to an already very talented group of women’s throwers.
Pete, who will graduate from Elkhorn South High School in Omaha, Neb., will join Kiah Hicks and company when she comes to compete at Colorado State for the 2014 season. Colorado State head track & field coach Brian Bedard is very excited for Pete to be a Ram.
“Aaliyah will come in and help the Rams right away. She's an outstanding student athlete with a passion to get better and challenge herself in everything she does. Her coach has done a great job teaching the fundamentals and we will continue to build off that foundation,” Bedard said of the high school senior.
During her freshman year of high school, Pete was the district champion in the shot put and took third place in the discus. At the Nebraska Class A State meet, she took second in the discus and third in the shot put. She repeated as district champion in the shot put during her sophomore year, while taking second in the shot put and discus in the state meet. At the state meet, she tossed 43 feet, 4 inches in the shot put and 135-2 in the discus.
Pete recently won the shot put at the prestigious Kansas Relays with a toss of over 47 feet, a personal best. She also earned second in the discus throw. Her personal best in the discus throw is an impressive 138-11.
Besides excelling in her throws events, Pete also succeeds in the classroom; she is a two-time academic letter winner.
