USTFCCCA Release

NEW ORLEANS – For the second straight week, Colorado State’s Mostafa Hassan is one of 10 athletes in the nation to be named to the Men’s Watch List for The Bowerman Award, as announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches’ Association (USTFCCCA) on Thursday.

The Bowerman Award is collegiate track & field’s highest honor, recognizing the nation’s most outstanding track & field athlete. Of the 10 athletes on the watch list, Hassan is the only thrower. Hassan is the first athlete in program history – men’s or women’s - to be named to the Watch List for The Bowerman Award.

Hassan adds his Bowerman candidacy to an already impressive list of accolades and accomplishments, including three All-America honors (two indoor), two Mountain West Men’s Student-Athlete of the Year honors (one indoor, one outdoor), three MW shot put titles (two indoor) and Colorado State’s most recent individual national championship.

After being named to the pre-indoor championship watch list, Hassan backed up the Bowerman hype with the Rams’ first individual national title since 2005. Hassan hurled the shot put 69-9.5 (21.17m) to win the national title by over four and a half feet. Hassan is CSU’s seventh national champion and won the Rams’ ninth individual national title overall.

The Cairo, Egypt native recorded his most impressive mark at the MW Indoor Track & Field Championships. Hassan unleashed a throw of 69-10.75 (21.30m) to shatter the previous conference record (66-10 by Jim Roberts of BYU in 2001) and help lift the Rams’ men to their first indoor MW title since 2002. Hassan’s mark of 69-10.75 was the best in the nation for the 2017 indoor season, and distinguished him as the No. 10 performer in NCAA history as well as the No. 4 performer in the world.

The Colorado State track & field team will look to build upon its program-best indoor national finish (No. 12) on the men’s side as it begins its outdoor season next weekend. The Rams are slated to open the outdoor season at the friendly confines of Jack Christiansen Track with the Fum McGraw Invitational on Saturday, March 25.
