FORT COLLINS, Colo. – With two weeks remaining until the Mountain West indoor championships the Colorado State track and field team is beginning to hit full stride. The Rams will have another opportunity this weekend to prove they’re one of the conference’s elite teams as they compete at the Air Force Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colo., and the Husky Invitational in Seattle, Wash.

Alex Balsiger, Alex Muntefering, Nicole Peters and seven other Rams alongside assistant coaches Bryan Berryhill and Joe Stephens will travel to the Pacific Northwest Friday, to compete at one of the best distance meets held during the indoor season, the Husky Invitational.

“We’re really trying to start to peak some of the athletes out at this point and gain some confidence going into conference,” said Head Coach Brian Bedard. “This is one of the best mid-distance/distance meets in the country so our athletes will be challenged. We’re trying to break some school records there.”

The rest of the CSU squad will head back to the Air Force Academy, where the Rams have already seen plenty of success in the 2012 season, to compete at the Air Force Invitational.

“It’s not a team-scored event at either place,” mentioned Bedard, “so we’re trying to better times and position ourselves for the indoor championships. Athletes are still trying to earn a spot on our conference team and move up the conference list, which helps your seeding position in conference.”

The Rams will face Air Force, Colorado, New Mexico State, Northern Colorado and Wyoming at the Cadet Field House.

The men’s squad enters the week ranked sixth in the Mountain region, while the women are currently ranked 11th, up two spots from last week.

“We have a good portion of the team we feel good about where they’re at,” added Bedard, “but about 30 percent of the team we’re trying to refine and get them ready to compete and help us out at conference.”

Competition at the Air Force Invitational begins Friday at 12:30 p.m. MST with the men’s weight throw.
