EUGENE, Ore. – Colorado State got off to a strong start at the NCAA Championships at Hayward Field Thursday, adding two to their lengthy list of All-Americans.
Trevor Brown set a new personal record -- which is also a CSU and Mountain West record -- in the semifinals of the 110-meter hurdles, crossing the finish line at 13.55 seconds. He earned a spot in the top eight and advance to the final round on Saturday.
“Trevor made the finals and is in the top eight, so he’s already a first-team All-American,” commented Head Coach Brian Bedard. “I promised him I would jump in the pool with my clothes on if he was first-team. He’s looking forward to that.”
Brown, who was a second-team All-American last year, is the Rams’ first first-team All-American since Kristen Hemphill, who earned the honor in 2010 for her performance in the steeplechase.
Jessica Sharbono earned second-team All-America honors for her performance in the discus. She placed 15th overall with a best throw of 169 feet, 10 inches on her first attempt.
“Technically Jessica’s turn looked great,” added Bedard, “She just wasn’t flying the disc well today. With the wind conditions, flight was critical. Jess would have needed a lifetime best to advance to finals and couldn’t pull it off. I’m still very proud of her. Second-team All-America as a junior is no piece of cake. She’s fired up and already talking about next year.”
Action for the Rams resumes Saturday with Ashley Reid
