LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Colorado State freshman decathlete Josh Cogdill showed Wednesday that he clearly isn't fazed by his first-ever outdoor track & field conference championship. Cogdill amassed a total of 3,582 points in the first five events of the decathlon, edging sophomore teammate Justin Green by a single point to hold the decathlon lead after day one of competition at the 2013 Mountain West Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Cogdill was victorious in the men's 100-meter dash, edging out Air Force sophomore Evan McDowell to win the race in 11.41 seconds. McDowell crossed the finish line in 11.42, while CSU sophomore Justin Green came in third at 11.43, a new personal record for the event.
Cogdill finished second in each of the remaining four events - the long jump, high jump, shot put, and 400-meter dash. In the long jump, Green paced the field with an extremely impressive mark of 22 feet, 9 inches. Cogdill came in second with a leap of 21-11.75, while senior Josh McMillin's jump of 21-5 was fourth.
McMillin dominated the shot put portion, tossing 42-1.25 for the victory. Cogdill placed second in the event, tossing 38-6, while Green took third with a mark of 36-4.
Green's mark of 6-6.25 was good enough to win the high jump, while Cogdill's mark of 6-5 was close behind and tied for second with Air Force's McDowell. McMillin's jump of 6-2.75 placed fourth in the event.
McDowell won the 400-meter dash in 51.51, but Cogdill crossed the finish line in a personal record time of 52.31 to take second in the event and uphold his overall lead. McMillin finished in 53.15 for a season best time and third place, while Green took fourth with a time of 53.19.
McMillin sits in fourth place after day one with a total of 3,490 points. CSU junior Colton Grandbouche holds fifth place with a total of 2,915 points.
Like Cogdill, CSU freshman Jessica Green was unfazed by the early action in her first outdoor track & field conference championship meet. She set a number of personal and season bests on the first day of competition.
The sole Ram competitor in the women's heptathlon, she finished with a season best time of 15.13 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles to finish 10th in the event. Green also leaped 5 feet, 4.5 inches in the high jump, placing third in the event and setting another season best.
Her shot put throw of 33-10 set yet another personal best and ranked seventh amongst the other competitors. She ended the day with another personal record, finishing the 200-meter dash in 27.16 seconds for 11th in the event.
After the first day of heptathlon events, Green sits in seventh place with a total of 2,857 points. San Diego State's Allison Reaser leads the field with 3,380 points.
The remaining five events of the decathlon and the remaining three of the heptathlon will take place Thursday in Las Vegas. The decathlon resumes with the 110-meter hurdles at 12 p.m. MT, while the heptathlon resumes with the long jump at 12:30 p.m. MT.
