LARAMIE, Wyo. – The Colorado State track & field team travelled to Wyoming Friday for the Cowpoke Open as a final chance to fine-tune before the Mountain West Track & Field Championships. The team did just that, breaking numerous personal records on the day.

Included in the new personal records was Kiah Hicks’ discus toss of 180 feet, 10.5 inches. She led a group of Ram throwers that took the top four places in the women’s discus throw. Jessica Sharbono also set a personal record of 174-7, taking second place. The personal bests continued with third-place finisher Jenna Sliwinski, who threw 173-9.75. Liz Johnson placed fourth, tossing 167-1.  “I told these four girls before the season it could be the best four discus throwers we’ve ever had at the same time in school history,” said CSU head coach Brian Bedard Friday after the meet. “It’s especially impressive for Jenna considering she has only thrown the discus for about two years, and never threw discus in high school.”

Sliwinski also placed second in the women’s hammer throw, throwing 187-1. Teammate Marissa Wagner tossed 168-9.25 to finish sixth.

On the men’s side of the discus throw, JT Van Veen was the high finisher for the Rams with a toss of 171-5, good for fifth place. Jake Schneeberger was the seventh-place finisher with a toss of 166-0.5. In the men’s hammer throw, Ken Harriman crushed his personal record with an impressive toss of 198-1.25, finishing in third place. Carson Rowley took fourth with a throw of 182-7.75. Schneeberger was right behind Rowley in fifth with a toss of 181-0.75.

Harriman was victorious in the men’s shot put, winning the event with a mark of 55-2.5. Van Veen was second with a throw of 49-8.75, while Rowley was third with a throw of 46-2.25.

In the sprints, freshman Stefanie Tuder placed fourth in the women’s 100-meter dash with a new personal record of 12.60 seconds. She also finished eighth in the 200-meter dash, finishing in 25.94. Fellow freshman Josh DeLoach took second in the men’s 100, sprinting to a finish of 10.96.

Women’s 400-meter dash competitors Meagan Robinson and Marissa Smith finished back-to-back in sixth and seventh places with times of 59.47 and 59.81, respectively. On the men’s side of the same event, Zach Browning finished second with a new personal record of 48.96. Colorado State freshman Kordell Deffebaugh, running unattached, won the event with a time of 48.83.

In the women’s 100-meter hurdles, freshman Kara Hyde finished with an impressive time of 14.03 to finish second in the event and set a new personal best. Lindsey Keller took fourth with a time of 14.27, while Kalie Kirk finished fifth with a time of 14.66.  In the 400-meter hurdles, Mariah Witt took fourth with a time of 1:01.57.

It was business as usual for Trevor Brown, who took the men’s 110-meter hurdles with a time of 13.93. Sam Little placed third, finishing in 14.61, while Sam Saccomano took fourth, finishing in 14.74. Little placed first in the 400-meter hurdles, crossing the finish line in 53.66. Sam Lynass finished second, clocking in at 54.27.

A handful of Rams also participated at the Air Force Twilight Open in Colorado Springs, Colo., Friday. Jessi Macedo won the women’s javelin throw at the meet, tossing 135-11.75. Jazmyn Webster took the high jump, clearing 5-6 for the win.

Bedard was impressed with the efficiency of the small group that travelled to Wyoming. “It was just a final tune-up, and I let the athletes pick and choose a little bit so that they wouldn’t be overloaded with events. We just wanted to keep them sharp for next week, and I think we accomplished that. The small group we took up there, I thought we got a lot done.”

The Rams head to Las Vegas, Nev., for the Mountain West Outdoor Track & Field Championships May 8-11.
