Joe Stephens begins his fourth season as a cross country and track coach with Colorado State University. Beginning in the fall of 2011 Stephens transitioned from a volunteer coach to the assistant cross country coach at Colorado State University. He will also serve as the assistant middle and long distance coach during the indoor and outdoor track seasons.
Stephens has a bachelor's in recreation management from Mount Marty College, in Yankton, SD, and a masters in sports administration from Fort Hays State University, in Hays, KS.
While in college, Stephens competed in distance events on the NCAA Division I, II and NAIA levels. He qualified and competed in the NAIA National Outdoor Track and Field Championships during his sophomore and junior seasons.
Stephens began coaching in 2003 as a graduate assistant cross country and track coach at Fort Hays State University. He coached on the 2004 outdoor track and field Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference men and women championship teams. He also guided one runner to an NCAA DII All-America award in the 10,000-meters.
During the 2005-07 seasons, Stephens was an assistant cross country coach and the head horizontal jumps, 10,000 meters and marathon coach at Black Hills State University. He coached three Dakota Athletic Conference champions, two NAIA national qualifiers and two school-record holders while at BHSU.
