Both Magnus Lohse and Loree Smith were honored by the Mountain West Conference office for the second time this season, earning Mountain West Athletes of the Week for Feb. 1.
Smith earned the honor outright with her record breaking throws from the Robert Shine Invitational. Senior Loree Smith broke her own record in the weight throw for the third straight competition, throwing 71-2.5 to win the event and break the fieldhouse (60-8.5 - Robin Lyons, Wyoming, 2000), CSU (70-8, Smith, last week) and Mountain West Conference (70-11.25, Lyons, 2000) records. Smith’s throw also ranks second in NCAA Division I and is the third best throw recorded by an American this year.Smith has now won the award seven times in her career.
Lohse shares the award this week with Josh Rohatinsky from BYU. This is Lohse’s second award this year and 3rd of his career. Sophomore Magnus Lohse won the men’s shot put with a Colorado State school record, NCAA automatic qualifying mark and fieldhouse record with a toss of 65-8.75. He breaks the school record of 63-2 that he set as a freshman in 2004 and breaks the fieldhouse record of 65-6.5, held by four-time World Champion (three outdoor, one indoor) John Godina from 1994 when Godina competed for UCLA. Lohse’s throw is also the second best in Mountain West school history, behind the record of 66-10 held by Jim Roberts of BYU.
