2009 (Sophomore): Serena had her best weight throw of the indoor season at the Wyoming Robert Shine Invitational (Feb. 20) with a toss of 17.01m, good for second place. She finished her season at the MWC indoor championships finishing 16th in the shot put (12.26m) and fifth in the weight throw (16.83m). She started her outdoor season with a third-place finish in the hammer throw (52.28m) at the Potts Invitational (March 21). She came in second in the hammer throw (50.65m) at the Rob Upton Invitational (March 28). She had a second-place finish at the CU invitational (April 11) in the hammer throw (50.78m). She scored in the discus throw at the Jack Christiansen Invitational (April 24) with a throw of 45.57m and again in the hammer throw with a third-place finish (53.59m). She had another third-place finish in the hammer throw (52.12m) at the Colorado State Ram Open (May 9). Serena recorded season bests in all three throwing events at the MWC championships (May 13) with a 14th-place finish in the shot put (11.93m), a seventh-place finish in the discus throw (46.06m) and an eighth-place finish in the hammer throw (53.91).

2008 (Indoor Freshman): During the indoor season, Serena gained valuable experience. She then redshirted the outdoor season.

High School: Serena earned varsity letters in both basketball and track and field while attending Eaglecrest High School in Centennial, Colo. She was named all-league and all-city in the shot put and discus in both 2006 and 2007, and was all-state in the shot put in 2006. She holds the school record in the shot put (12.74m) and discus throw (39.75m).

Serena was born on Aug. 1, 1989, to Darius and Barbara Johnson in Clovis, N.M. She has a brother, Darius Jr., and a sister, Tanesha, who also competes for Colorado State track. She is majoring in business administration.
