FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The indoor track and field season gets underway this weekend as the Colorado State men’s and women’s teams head to Laramie, Wyo., for the Wyoming Open on Saturday. As this is a power meet, only the sprints, jumps and throws events will be taking place.

Head Coach Brian Bedard has been putting his team through some tough practices in the week leading up to the event and has an upbeat attitude despite the inexperience of many of the athletes on his women’s roster.

“We have an extremely young women’s team this season,” he said. “The team is heavy with freshmen and sophomores. They will have to grow up in a hurry and the coaches will have to work extremely hard to get them ready to compete. I like the attitude and work ethic that I have seen from them so far, but it is yet to be seen how they will perform in an actual event.”

The women’s team, while young and inexperienced, will have some leaders to look to this season. Among them are sprinter Tanesha Johnson and throws specialists Missy Faubus and Jennifer Ugochukwu.

“Tanesha is definitely a standout for us in the sprints and jumps events,” Bedard said. “It will be important for our team that she gets off to a good start this year. Missy Faubus has had a very good fall and looks ready to go. It wouldn’t surprise me to see her hit an NCAA qualifying mark at the first meet this weekend. Ugochukwu has also looked real good in the shot put during practice.”

On the men’s side, Bedard is looking for his team to post better results than they did last season. He knows that he has more experience than on the women’s side, and he expects that experience to show through.

“Our men’s team is more balanced than the women’s,” he said. “That being said, however, we still have our share of young athletes. Overall I want the men’s team to compete better this season. I was disappointed with their overall competitiveness last year. I want to see their intensity level increase. We filled some gaps on our roster with recruits and transfers but, again, we’ll see what happens when the competition begins.”

Bedard will be looking to standout throwers Alex Godell and Cameron Carter to lead the team this weekend.

“Alex and Cameron are both ready to go,” he said. “Al has already hit 64 feet in the weight throw in practice, so I’m excited to see what he can do once the season starts.”
