FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State men's golf program has three players competing in the 2017 U.S. Amateur, hosted by the United States Golf Association, August 14-20 at Riviera Country Club and Bel-Air Country Club in southern California. Junior Jake Staiano, sophomore AJ Ott and freshman Parathakorn "Poon" Suyasri will be among the 312 competitors vying for the prestigious title.

There are 39 states and 29 countries represented in the field, with Staiano and Ott being two of the three from Colorado and Suyasri one of two golfers to qualify from Thailand.

Staiano qualified at Columbine Country Club in Columbine Valley, Colo., finishing second among the 84-player field, shooting a 7-under 137. A 2017 NCAA individual qualifier and low amateur in this year's Colorado Open, he will be going off No. 1 at Riviera CC in the first group at 7 a.m. PDF on the first day and then playing at 12:15 p.m. off No. 10 at Bel Air CC on Tuesday. Staiano will be playing with P.J. Samiere, a current junior at San Diego State who was an All-Region golfer and won the California State Amateur, and Jack Schultz, a qualifier for the 2017 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball this year.

Ott advanced at the event at Fort Collins Country Club, shooting a 1-over 71 in the morning round and then came back with an even-par 70 in the final 18 to tie Steve Irwin, son of Golf Hall of Famer Hale Irwin. In his 36 holes of play on the day, Ott made three birdies, two bogeys and one double bogey. Ott will start on No. 10 at Riviera CC at 12:15 pm on Monday and then tee off at 7 a.m. on No. 1 at Bel Air CC on Tuesday, playing with Kyle Brey, the Sunshine State Conference medalist from Berry Univ., and Nathan Jeansonne, a three-year letterwinner at LSU.

Suyasri earned his spot by winning the qualifier at Columbine CC over Staiano by two shots at 9-under 135 with one eagle, 10 birdies and just three bogeys in his 36 holes. The incoming freshman will start at 2 p.m. at No. 1 at Bel Air CC on Monday and then follow it up with an 8:45 round off No. 10 at Riviera CC. He will compete with Hunter Richardson, the two-time Ohio Valley Conference champion from Tennessee-Martin, and Cameron Lippoldt, the first-ever qualifier from Northwood University.

The first two days of competition will be stroke play, with each player playing one round at Riviera CC (7,272 yards/Par 70) in Pacific Palisades and one round at Bel-Air CC (6,722 yards/Par 70) in Los Angeles on August 14 and 15. From there, the field will be cut to the top 64 players based on their stroke play and seeded into match play at Riviera for the final five days of play, concluding with a 36-hole final on August 20. The match play will be televised on a combination of USGA.org, Fox Sports 1 and the semifinals and championship covered on Fox.
