FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Colorado State freshman Parathakorn "Poon" Suyasri will compete in the 2017 Asian-Pacific Amateur Championship, October 26-29, at Royal Wellington Golf Club in New Zealand.

One of the top six amateur events in the world, Suyasri qualified through his participation in events representing his native country of Thailand. This past summer, he moved into the top 1000 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings after posting three top-15 finishes in significant junior events as well as making the cut at the Asian Tour's Thailand Open, where he tied for 28th. At CSU, he has played in all three events for the Rams with one top-10 finish, helping CSU to one team title and three top-five placings. He will tee off at Thursday, Oct. 26 at 12:30 p.m. local time on the 10th hole, playing with Charlie Hillier of New Zealand and Matthew Cheung of Hong Kong.

"I'm very happy for Poon to have such an amazing opportunity to compete against some of the best amateurs in the world," head coach Christian Newton said. "It's a tremendous accomplishment to be invited to this prestigious event."

Invitations for the championship were sent to the leading players from the 41 Asia-Pacific Golf Confederation (APGC) affiliated organizations. Each organization was automatically provided with two positions, which are to be filled by their highest-ranked players from the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR). The remainder of the field was filled by taking the next highest ranked players from the WAGR with the maximum number of players allowed from any organization being six. The only exception is for the host country, which was allowed to nominate an additional four players.

The event will be tape-delay broadcast in the United States on ESPN2, with the first three rounds airing from 1-4 a.m. and the final round on Oct. 29 from 3:30-6:30 a.m. Additionally, ESPN2 will run a highlight show on Oct. 29 from 4-4:30 p.m. The winner of the event earns invitations to the 2018 Masters in Augusta, Ga., and The Open Championship at Carnoustie in 2018, conducted by The R&A.
