Mike Newell was raised in Littleton, Colo. and is a fith generation Coloradoan. He graduated from Colorado State in 1999 with a bachelor of science degree in Landscape Horticulture and in 2007 obtained a master's degree in Sport Administration from the University of Northern Colorado. Since 2004 Mike has been teaching and coaching at Mead Middle School in Mead, Colo. in addition to coaching football at Lyons High School.
Mike played football under Sonny Lubick at CSU from 1994-98 garnering all-conference awards, a team MVP award in 1998, and was named CSU's top male scholar athlete (Merrill-Gheen Award) two times. After graduation he went on to enjoy a five year professional football career in which he played for the Green Bay Packers, Saint Louis Rams and Houston Texans. He attributes his experiences at Colorado State University, both academically and athletically, as a major catalyst to a successful and content life.
In June of 2003 Mike married CSU alumna Kate (Flaherty) Newell, who was an athletic trainer for the Rams. They welcomed Genevieve Mae Newell into their lives in November of 2006. Mike enjoys family time, backpacking, camping and gardening in his spare time.
