This Week in Rams Athletics: Basketball travels to Mountain West tournament

FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- In the opening-round game of the 2009 Conoco Mountain West basketball tournament, the No. 8 seed CSU men will take on the No. 9 seed Air Force Falcons.
Tipoff on Wednesday in Las Vegas, Nev., is set for 3 p.m. MT, with the winner advancing to face top-seeded BYU in the quarterfinals. CSU won both games against Air Force during the season, but the team is prepared for a potential challenge on a neutral court.
The Rams hope for a tournament win on Wednesday, following a loss at San Diego State last week in their season finale.
With a 4-12 record in Mountain West Conference play, the CSU women's basketball team heads to the 2009 Conoco Mountain West tournament this week as the No. 8 seed. The Rams will face rival and No. 5 seed Wyoming in the opening round of the tournament on Tuesday with tip off set for 5:30 p.m. MT.
No. 4 New Mexico and No. 9 Air Force will play prior to the CSU game, with their tipoff at 3 p.m. MT. The winners will face each other in a quarterfinal matchup on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. MT. The tournament, being held at the Thomas and Mack Center, will continue through Saturday with the championship game slated for 2 p.m. MT.
The CSU women lost a close final game of the season last week, falling 68-66 to San Diego State at Moby Arena. It was the final home game for seniors Kandy Beemer, Britney Minor, Carine Reimink and Amaka Uzomah, as the team celebrated Senior Night.
Swimming and diving
Colorado State diver Shayna Solomon will head to Colorado Springs, Colo., this week to compete at the Zone E NCAA regional diving competition. The three-day event begins Thursday. Solomon, a freshman this year, has played a large role in the Rams' success in the pool during the 2008-09 season.
Indoor track and field
NCAA indoor track and field championships are being held this week at Texas A&M. The Colorado State team will compete in the championships that are being held all day March 13-14.
Most recently, three CSU track team members participated at Iowa State in the "Last Chance" meet in order to qualify for the NCAA championships.
CSU will participate in the National Invitational softball tournament beings Friday in San Jose, Calif. The three-day tournament begins with the Rams facing San Jose State at 10 a.m. MT, followed by a 4 p.m. game against Vermont. On Saturday, Colorado State will face Sacramento State at 12:15 p.m. MT, followed by a 2:15 p.m. MT first pitch against UC Davis. The Rams will conclude tournament play on Sunday with a 12:15 p.m. MT rematch with Vermont.
The Rams have not been on the field since March 1, when they successfully finished the San Diego Classic with a 3-2 record.
The women's tennis team will head to Hilton Head Island, S.C., this weekend for a Spring Break tournament. The team will then travel to Savannah, Ga., on Monday to face off with Armstrong Atlantic State.
The Rams water polo team will return to the pool for its first action since the Seawolf Splash tournament concluded on Feb. 22. The team travels to Los Angeles, Calif., this week to compete in a tournament held by the nation's ninth-ranked team and WWPA rival Loyola Marymount. On Saturday, Colorado State will face Loyola Marymount at 8:30 a.m. MT, followed by a 1:10 p.m. MT match against Princeton.
The Rams will finish the two-day tournament on Sunday with two games, one at 10:50 a.m. MT against Cal State San Bernardino and the other at 3:30 p.m. MT vs. Sonoma State.
