Clear for Practice and Competition
Q: Once an incoming student-athlete is certified as academic final qualifier, are they finished with the Eligibility Center and are cleared for practice and competition?
A:No. Once an incoming student-athlete is certified as an academic qualifier, he or she may practice (after pre-season or fall school begins) temporarily while waiting for amateurism certification (recruited SAs get a 14-day grace period while non-recruited SAs get 45 days). To continue practicing beyond that time, and to be cleared for competition a SA must be a qualifier AND a certified amateur. These are two distinct processes at the Eligibility Center. In order for a PSA to be certified as an amateur he or she must:
- Register with the Eligibility Center (www.eligibilitycenter.org)
- Truthfully answer the amateurism questions during the registration process.
- Request final amateurism certification (after Nov. 1st for Spring enrollees and after April 1st for Fall enrollees)
- Monitor the email address used to register for possible correspondence from the amateurism processing staff.
As always, be sure to get in touch with the Compliance Office and ask before you act!
